Khawla Sheikh is Jordan’s first female plumber. Her vocation originated with interest in Jordan’s water scarcity. Her plumbing career started when she discovered that housewives’ major issue with maintaining water-saving systems was their inability to ask male plumbers for help. Khawla officially learned plumbing and taught other women too, creating a network (“shabaka” in Arabic) of accredited female plumbers in the service of other women.
