KAWAMEN AL MADINA

Two Weeks Workshop & Seminar

Location: The Lab at Darat al Funun

Year: 2016

“Kawamen” comes from the Arabic word “kamen,” which signifies what is innate, and potentials that can make a big difference once revealed through dialogue and new methodologies.

The static is measureable and quantifiable. Hence, statistics can be collected and used in planning ahead. In a city, its particular energy, its face and heart are comprised by so much more than just numbers. A city is constantly generated by its inhabitants and their routines beyond any plan designed; thus, the dynamic elements of a city have atypical measuring instruments or units.

Artists may be able to collect dynamic findings and may decipher them and/or build upon them. One day, artists may become part of the city planning process, and their methodologies may help planners in approaching areas beyond their reach.

The workshop presented the central municipal library and its neighborhood as a case study. It included seminars about reference works, site visits, and round-table exchanges. Given site findings and personal visions, each participant chose the most convenient artistic form to serve their individual projects.
